Kate McClure was stuck on Interstate 27 in New Jersey when her car ran out of gas. She didn’t have any money and didn’t know how to get out of the difficult bind.
Then, a homeless veteran approached her. The man, named Johnny Bobbitt Jr., told her that the area wasn’t safe. He was so concerned that he walked a few blocks over to a gas station. Using his last and only $20, he bought the woman gas and brought it to her.
Kate was so grateful, but she didn’t have any money. She promised she would come back to repay him. Eventually, Kate returned to the area several times afterward to bring Johnny clothes, food, and money.
Still, the 27-year-old woman wanted to do more. She decided to start a fundraiser for Johnny.
“I wish that I could do more for this selfless man, who went out of his way just to help me that day,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page. “I truly believe that all Johnny needs is one little break. Hopefully, with your help I can be the one to give it to him.”
On Thanksgiving, the fundraiser accrued $110,000 in donations, far beyond the $10,000 goal Kate had set. The Friday after the holiday, Kate had raised $227,000 for Johnny.
Kate and Johnny plan on using the money to get him housing, transportation, and to pay off his debts.
