The world first met Marcio Donaldson when he nervously appeared on American Idol’s stage last season, hoping to win over everyone’s hearts. The 28-year-old was elated to make it past the first round, but sadly didn’t go much farther.
So when he tried his luck a second time on the show, he arrived ready with a new song, a life-altering story to share and a different outlook on life. The judges couldn’t believe what had transpired in Marcio’s life since they last saw him.
Marcio and his sister grew up with a single mother in a small apartment. They lived in an area where crime was abundant and their mother fiercly protected them.
But life was a huge struggle for the small family and Marcio and his sister eventually landed in foster care. He frequently turned to the one thing that brought happiness to his life — music.
Marcio hoped that his voice and music would one day sweep him away from the violence and crime that riddled his childhood. And it did.
That taste of succces Marcio esperienced on American Idol was enough to fuel him forward. He was bound and determined to go farther this time.
However, when Marcio returned home ready to improve his audition material, he discovered his sister was expecting. She was still battling a drug addiction and the authorities showed up to take the baby away.
Marcio was there to face the officials. They gave him two options.
“They came to me, they told me I only had 10 minutes to decide or he goes into the system.”
He took one look at the baby. Then he made his choice.
“So I said, ‘No thank you, I’ll take him.’ I took that responsibility on because I didn’t want him growing up the same way I grew up. I want to do this for him.”
At just 28 years old, Marcio became a single parent just like his mother. But he had no doubts about what he did.
“I had no idea what I was doing, but actually he’s a real gift. And it was the right decision, I know. He’s changed my life.”
When Marcio returned to the American Idol stage with new material and a fresh outlook, he sang not just for himself, but his six-month-old nephew whom he considers his son. He has vowed to give him a better life.
During his audition, the tears flowed freely. His performance was raw and real.
It was flawless. He was given the golden ticket and promptly burst into tears.
